Three recent publications highlight the breadth of Pneumocystis research

Three recent publications involving members of DELVE-INTO-PNEUMOCYSTIS explore complementary aspects of Pneumocystis research, spanning inflammation and cardiovascular risk, global research trends and priorities, and genetic diversity in animal hosts.

Recent months have brought three new scientific contributions involving members of DELVE-INTO-PNEUMOCYSTIS, reflecting the broad and multidisciplinary scope of current Pneumocystis research.

One review explores the potential connections between Pneumocystis jirovecii, β-glucans, systemic inflammation, and cardiovascular risk, extending the discussion of the biological relevance of Pneumocystis beyond pulmonary disease.

A second study takes a global perspective, analysing more than a century of P. jirovecii research to map scientific achievements, collaboration networks, geographical inequalities, and remaining knowledge gaps. The work provides a framework for identifying priorities for future research and strengthening international collaboration in the field.

Moving from humans to animal hosts, a third study investigates Pneumocystis in foals and reveals both a remarkably high frequency of detection and substantial genetic diversity. The findings provide new insights into strain diversity, host associations, and the broader evolutionary landscape of the genus.

Together, these publications illustrate the diversity of questions currently being addressed across the Pneumocystis research community—from molecular and clinical implications to global research priorities and host–fungus diversity.
